Why don't you take insurance?
Dr. Young works tirelessly to have a relationship with YOU, not your insurance company. As a result, Artís Health & Wellness chose not to contract with any insurers; we are an “out of network” practice for all private insurance companies and have opted-out of Medicare.
In an insurance-based model, doctors are forced to see a 16+ patients every day just to cover overhead, and time with your doctor is as little as 8 minutes per appointment. This 'churn and burn' model of care is devoid of a physician-patient relationship (what we value most), creates long wait times (no one likes to wait), is dangerous for patients (important details about YOU are overlooked or missed), and causes the smartest and most caring primary care physicians to burn out. This type of care is also impersonal and is only a solution for 'sick-care', not the disease prevention and wellness care model we embody.
There are a growing number of practices who reject this approach to medical care (some physicians salaries are solely based on productivity). We believe you deserve to have a physician (or healer) who focuses on you and not on the number of patients seen per day.
Additionally, if Artís Health & Wellness contracted with your insurance, we would be agreeing to treat you according to the treatment protocols that the insurance companies have deemed 'appropriate' for the masses, not an individual. Artís Health & Wellness feels that YOU ARE AN INDIVIDUAL and thus, we have chosen not to participate with insurance.
We do offer consultations and can provide a superbill upon request. We suggest you check your insurance carrier regarding out of network benefits.
What if I don't have insurance? Or have non-traditional insurance like a Health Share plan?
No problem, we maintain a transparency with our fee structure and we make it easy for people without insurance to get care. We can also arrange for discounted lab and radiology testing for those patients paying cash for their services. However an Artís membership is NOT a replacement for insurance or the insurance requirement according to ACA law.
Are Medicare beneficiaries eligible to join Artís Health & Wellness?
Yes, Medicare beneficiaries are welcome to become a member or see Dr. Young for consultation. Please contact us to discuss booking an appointment as we have opted out of Medicare participation and Medicare beneficiaries cannot request a superbill nor reimbursement for their visits.
What do you get with a Membership with the Artís Health & Wellness?
An Artís membership is our medical concierge care program that includes unlimited visits (in-person, house call, virtual) and high touch 24/7 access to Dr. Young. Members are seen same or next business day. A sample membership agreement maybe previewed here.
Is Membership a substitute for insurance?
The Artís membership is not a substitute for health insurance. We are not aware of any medical insurance policies that explicitly cover the membership fee however some benefit plans may reimburse all or a portion of the membership fee. The Artís membership does not meet the ACA requirements for insurance coverage.
What is the difference between an MD and a DO?
DOs (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine) and MDs (Doctors of Medicine) are alike in many ways. Both attend a four-year medical school after completing pre-med classes and a bachelor’s degree. Both DOs and MDs are required to pass rigorous professional board exams and to maintain a medical license that demands accountability and ongoing medical education. Both are recognized as Primary Care Physicians or can be specialists or sub-specialists or super sub-specialists. Both can prescribe any/all medications according to DEA regulation. In clinical practice, both DOs and MDs evaluate a patient using diagnostic interviews, physical exams and lab tests. Both then treat disease, decrease risk factors and prolong lives. The primary difference lies in the focus of their training and the treatment approach, with a DO typically leaning toward more holistic and hands on care.
What is Functional Medicine?
The Functional Medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
By addressing root cause, rather than symptoms, practitioners become oriented to identifying the complexity of disease. They may find one condition has many different causes and, likewise, one cause may result in many different conditions. As a result, Functional Medicine treatment targets the specific manifestations of disease in each individual.
About the Founder, Dr. Andrea Young, DO:
Andrea Young, DO is boarded in Family Medicine and has extensive experience in Integrative and Functional Medicine modalities and use of a holistic approach to patient care. She was raised in Oklahoma (daughter of a medical family) and moved to sunny Southern California for medical training; she will tell you the Sunshine and Vitamin D is what got her through med school!
She received her degree in medicine (Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine) from the Western University of Health Sciences - College of the Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. After realizing she loved connecting with patients rather than operating on them (there was a challenging but rewarding time spent as a surgical subspecialty resident), Dr. Young landed back in Southern California for Family Medicine residency prior to seeking additional training in Integrative Medicine, including Ayurvedic training at the Chopra Center in Carlsbad, CA and ongoing wide-spread independent training in Functional Medicine.
Gradually making her way through many 'healthcare systems' on the east coast and west, she made her way to the Bay Area and fell in love with the hills of Sausalito, the beauty of Marin County and the personality of its people. She founded Artís Health & Wellness in 2017 to improve upon her practice of medicine through connectedness and community and concierge style care. She is humbled by the way her practice has grown by word of mouth alone, across all of California. In July 2019, Dr. Young opened her practice to the community of Southern California as well, practicing in Los Angeles’ South Bay & PV Peninsula. The Artís expansion allows easy access to any individuals who seek consultation from Dr. Young, nearby or far away, to travel to (Northern or Southern) California to do so. In 2020, she opted to close the doors of her traditional “doctor’s office” and commit to seeing patients either in the comfort of their own home for housecalls or virtually.
She is committed to having a ‘real relationship’ with her patients and finding root cause of disease rather than chasing diagnoses or giving “a pill for every ill”.
When she is not consulting with her patients, she can be found in the kitchen recipe testing, working out in the home gym on her peloton or hydrow, or hanging with her beloved PWD-Poodle, Bentley. She is also a busy bonus mom of two teen boys, entrepreneur/investor/advisor, seasoned yoga practitioner, Brené Brown follower and aspiring surfer & podcaster. She values nothing more than her relationships in her life and believes that connection is what every individual needs to thrive.
